Jack Doherty
Jack Doherty is chairman of the Craft Potters Association of Great Britain and is involved with the organization of potters conferences, fairs and workshops.
All of Jack's production work is thrown. He enjoys decorating the pots while they are still fresh and wet on the wheel. He uses a variety of tools - often found objecs like dismantled pens or broken blades - to indent, mark and rib the soft clay. Darker pots are thrown with an interior layer of clay stained with copper carbonate Paler pieces are given surface washes of copper when dry. Large plates and dishes are formed from soft porcelain slabs that are drawn on, stretched, pierced, stretched and manipulated before being shaped in simple wooden frame molds. Jack's work is always fired and soda glazed, even though there is an element of risk and unpredictability that is not part of conventional high temperature glaze firings.
